ADA Stall Requirement Checker
The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design publish a table (208.2) setting the minimum accessible stalls for any lot size, and a van rule on top of it. Enter a lot and see the federal baseline, with the sources to verify. Nothing here is legal advice; it is the published table, computed.
The lot
What makes a stall count (2010 Standards)
- Car-accessible stall: at least 96 inches (8 ft) wide with an access aisle at least 60 inches (5 ft) wide running its full length (sections 502.2, 502.3).
- Van-accessible stall: at least 132 inches (11 ft) wide with a 60-inch aisle, or 96 inches wide with a 96-inch aisle, plus 98 inches of vertical clearance on the stall and its route (sections 502.2, 502.5).
- Access aisles: marked so as to discourage parking in them; two stalls may share one aisle. Marking style and color conventions are commonly set by state or local code (section 502.3).
- Surface and slope: stalls and aisles must not slope steeper than 1:48, about 2 percent, in any direction (section 502.4).
- Signs: the International Symbol of Accessibility at each stall, at least 60 inches to the bottom of the sign, with a van accessible designation at van stalls; sites with four or fewer total spaces do not require identification signs (sections 502.6, 216.5).
- Location: on the shortest accessible route to the accessible entrance (section 208.3).
